Fireplace Tiling for Lisa Dawson – York

Tile Club recently completed two bespoke fireplace tiling installations for interior influencer Lisa Dawson at her beautifully styled home in York. The project focused on enhancing two existing fireplaces using handcrafted tiles and a layout that highlights the natural character of the materials while complementing the home’s relaxed, eclectic aesthetic.

For the first fireplace, we installed Little Greene Bassoon Rectangle metro tiles from Bert & May in the deep ochre glazed finish. The rich mustard tone adds warmth and depth to the fireplace recess, pairing beautifully with the exposed brick arch and the modern black log burner. The glossy glaze catches natural light throughout the day, bringing subtle tonal variation and life to the tiled surface.

The second fireplace was tiled using Purple Brown glazed square tiles, also from Bert & May. These tiles introduce a deeper, more dramatic colour, with natural variations in the glaze enhancing the handcrafted feel. The darker tones create a strong visual anchor within the room while maintaining the warm, layered look that defines the home’s interior style.

Both fireplaces were installed using a stacked tile layout, chosen specifically to minimise grout lines and allow the tiles themselves to take centre stage. Rather than creating a sharp, uniform grid, this approach produces a softer, more natural and handcrafted grout line that complements the artisanal quality of the glazed tiles. The result is a finish that feels authentic, relaxed and in keeping with the character of the property.

Each tile was carefully aligned and installed with precision to maintain consistency while still celebrating the natural irregularities of the handmade surfaces. By extending the tiling across the fireplace recess and hearth, the installations frame the stove beautifully while providing a durable and practical surface.

This project is a great example of how thoughtful tile selection and expert fireplace tiling can transform a traditional architectural feature into a striking design element.
